In ancient Daoist Chinese medicine, Lapis Lazuli, known as Tian Qing Shi or "celestial blue stone," was valued for its ability to support both physical and emotional well-being. It was used to address a range of issues, including high blood pressure, liver regulation, feelings of scarcity or inadequacy, irritability, and joint pain. Beyond its physical benefits, Lapis Lazuli was believed to aid in astral travel, enhance speech and self-expression, and promote clear thinking—qualities that also made it a favored stone among Egyptian royalty.
During the European Renaissance, the powdered pigment derived from Lapis Lazuli, called ultramarine, was the most prized and expensive of all paint pigments. This vivid blue was reserved for the most significant and central figures in artwork, such as the Virgin Mary, symbolizing its divine importance. I find this connection especially inspiring for artists and creatives, as it embodies a history of reverence for beauty, creativity, and self-expression.

My work is a practice. Fabricating a piece of jewelry from raw metal takes time. Like reciting a sacred prayer, I’m in the present moment when I’m building a piece. Using ancient metalsmithing techniques, I slowly and intentionally form the hard metal into something beautiful and unique. I listen for each stone to speak to me, and they always do. Each element is lovingly held in my fingers until the finished piece is birthed. It’s truly a sacred dance. Every piece of Christine Mighion jewelry is handcrafted by me in my Northern Indiana studio using the highest qualities materials and attention to detail.
